I’ve worked on Capitol Hill. I’ve been a career counselor. I’m a wife and a mom. With this last job comes many roles: teacher; mediator; storyteller; photographer; chef; chauffer; etc., etc.
And through it all I’ve been a writer. After my son was born people enjoyed anecdotes detailing my experiences as a new mom, from surviving sleep deprivation to the challenges of changing diapers. Fast forward a few years, add another kid and my funny stories have turned into my parenting humor column "My Big Top World."
I still keep my feet in the career world, writing the Career Chats blog and articles for the National Association of Colleges and Employers. But I’ve branched out into other niches, too.
What I love most about freelance writing is the chance to explore so many different subjects and tell so many stories. One day I'm visiting a North Carolina winery, the next day I'm talking to a manners expert about play date etiquette, and by week's end I'm talking to a former Hollywood costume designer.
Before bringing a story to life I ask myself one question: Why am I writing this? Because if I don’t know how can I expect readers to know? If I have the opportunity to move people through words, inform them with facts, or introduce them to an interesting person, place or thing, I'm going to do it. If there's a story to tell, I want to share it.
So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
